The district of Manikganj is part of the Dhaka Division. It covers 1,383.66 square kilometers in total (534.23 sq mi). In 1971, the war to free Manikganj District was led by Abdul Halim Chowdhury, Abdul Matin Chowdhury, Principal Abdur Rouf Khan, and other district heroes. In 1984, it became a district.

How to go Manikganj from Dhaka

50 kilometers separate Dhaka and Manikganj. The distance via road is 58.1 kilometers. It is possible to travel from Dhaka to Manikganj (Station) by bus, taxi, or automobile. By bus, it takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to get from Dhaka to Manikganj. With a constant speed of 50 kilometers per hour, you can reach Manikganj in 1 hour and three minutes.

Selfi Paribahan, Nilachol Paribahan ,BRTC Bus Service, Shuvojatra Bus Service, Padma Line and many other buses are accessible from Gabtoli, Motijheel (Near Adamji court & Shilpo bank) and Gulisthan (Gulisthan Hall Market). The bus fare is 100-120 BDT.

Tourist Places in Manikganj

1.Baliati Jomidar Bari, Manikganj

Saturia Upozila in the Manikganj district of Bangladesh is where the famous Baliati Jomidar Bari is. The village is called Baliati. This piece of archeology is about 200 years old. At one time, a river called Gazikhali ran along the northern side of the palace.

Gobinda Ram Shaha brought the Zomidari to Baliati and gave them land. He bought and sold salt. Since his ancestor didn’t have any money, he started a small business. His parents later gave it to him. He then added Zomidari to his business to make it bigger.

The whole premise is huge (approximately 16000 square meter). There could be up to 200 rooms in the building. On the back side of the palace, there is a pond with four ghats. On the other side of the pond, you can see a set of clean bathrooms.

RP Shaha, a kind and noble person from Tangail, is one of my heroes. His wife is Kiran Bala, who comes from the Baliati Zomidar family. This kind-hearted person wanted to build a hospital in Baliati, but he couldn’t get permission. Later, he started his own hospital in the town where he grew up.

Contribution in Education sector:

This Jamidar family contributed considerably to the education industry. They founded both Dhaka Jogonnath University  and the Dhaka Jogonnath  Hall of Dhaka University.

How to go to Baliati Jomidar Bari

You must first travel by bus to Saturia, Manikganj. You may easily go to the Baliati by taking a rickshaw from Saturia bazaar for 20 Taka.

 

2. Betila House

The two merchants, Jyoti Babu and Satya Babu ware involving Jute trade built The Betila (বেতিলা) House in Manikganj about a century ago.

This majestic home is in Betila, a distant location of Manikganj proper.

Online searches for heritage sites in Manikganj may turn up multiple links to the famed Baliati Zamindar’s Palace, but no links to Betila. This is partly due to the fact that the Betila House was not a Zamindar’s (Land Owner) palace, and partly due to its isolated location.

It’s a hybrid construction made up of two two-story buildings that stand side by side, virtually complete, with an open field in front of them.

The Betila Mitra Union of Manikganj would be an excellent heritage place to visit if you’re seeking for one. It’s in a semi-rural location (although not far from urban centers) and doesn’t appear to be very unusual at first glance, but as you learn more about its history and traditions, lovely places such as the Betila House and others emerge.

How to go To Betila House

It’s only 9-10 kilometers south-east from the Manikganj Bazar Bus Stop. You can take a bus or a CNG auto rickshaw from Betila to Sinagair Bus Stop. When you arrive at the Betila Bus Stand, it’s only a kilometer distant and may be covered by rickshaw.

 

3.Teota Jomidar Bari, Manikganj/তেওতা জমিদার বাড়ী

This palace was the residence of two brothers, the kings of Teota, Babu Hemsankar Ray and Babu Joy Sankar Ray.

Teota Jomidar Bari lives in Shibalaya upozila, Manikganj district. Locals refer to the palace as Teota Rajbari, Teota Jomidar bari, and so on. This medieval Zomidar palace could be hundreds of years old.

There are over 50 rooms in all. The buildings are currently occupied by homeless people.

On the building’s western side, there is a large pond and a temple called Noborotno temple. The temple is a four-storied structure with excellent construction. Each of the store’s other two corners is occupied by a minaret-like moth.

How To Go To Teota Jomidar Bari:

To reach Teota’s Jomidar Bari, you can take a rickshaw for 20 taka or an auto for 10 taka from the Aricha ferry ghat. It will take around 15 minutes to arrive.

 

4. Nava Ratna Temple

The Navaratna temple is located within the Teota Palace grounds. This temple’s architecture is more likely European style architecture than traditional Hindu architecture. As a result, it is distinct. Although the Palace is 300 years old, the shrine does not appear to be. It has recently been renovated and now appears to be brand new.

Built in celebration of the family god and used during the ‘Dol’ celebration, the outstanding Navaratna adjacent to the rajbari is one of the tallest and most elegant of its kind. It stands 75 feet in height. I think the temple has been white washed and plastered multiple times by the local people.

 

5. Motter Moth, Manikganj/মত্তের মঠ

Motto Temple or Motter Moth is located in the village Motto, which is located on the eastern side of Manikganj town. This Shiva temple-style structure reaches 50-60 feet tall. The temple, which is located close to a pond, is currently abandoned. A new temple with its own boundaries is built near the previous one.

The builder’s name and duration are unknown. Motto is said to have been home of the famous Jomidar Ram Krishna Sen. This temple could have been built by him.

How To Go to Motter Moth:

If you ride a rickshaw there, it will cost you between BDT 30-40 and will take you there in about twenty minutes.

 

6.Dhankora Zamindar Bari, Manikganj

Dhankora Zamindar Bari is a historical zamindar residence located in the Bangladeshi village of Dhankora, Saturia upazila, Manikganj district.

The zamindar house was founded by zamindar Narsingh Roy Chowdhury. These zamindars’ descendants originated in Delhi, India. Then, until the termination of the zamindari system, successive generations of descendants of zamindars carried out the responsibilities of this zamindari.

Zamindar Narsingh Roy Chowdhury was the father of Girish Gobind Roy Chowdhury. He was the father of Hemchandra Roy Chowdhury. Amulya Chandra Roy Chowdhury, Biren Chandra Roy Chowdhury, and Nirmal Chandra Roy Chowdhury were his three sons. The zamindars built a school adjacent to the zamindar’s residence.

They also held zamindari in the present-day districts of Jagannathpur and Khaliajuri. In 1952, after partition dissolved the zamindari system, the heirs of the zamindar family went to India.

 

7.Ishwar Chandra High School/ঈশ্বর চন্দ্র উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়

Ishwar Chandra High School located in the Manikganj District’s Saturia Upazila, next to the Baliati Palace. Ishwar Chandra Ray Chowdhury, a well-known Zamindar in Baliati, was honored with the name of this institution. Horendra Kumar Ray founded this institution in the years 1915-1916, according to locals. Horendra Kumar Ray was Ishwar Chandra Ray Chowdhury’s son, according to legend. Ishwar Chandra English High School was the original name of this school, but it was changed later.

Horendra Kumar Ray Chowdhury is claimed to have spent roughly fifty thousand taka on the ornate and spacious school building at the time. At the time, that was an enormous sum to pay. This school is now run by a local committee.

 

8. Shahrail Boro Bari/সাহরাইল বড় বাড়ি

Shahrail Boro Bari is located in Singair Bazar, next to Charigram Bazar.
From Singair Bazar, take a left and go around 7-8 kilometers to reach the old mansion known as Shahrail Boro Bari.

Given the construction, building arrangement, and decorative patterns that are still apparent in open eyes, we can speculate that it was perhaps the residence of the estate’s eminent authorities.

This property belonged to the two Saha brothers, Ram Mohon Saha and Koushik Saha, who purportedly sold it to the current owner, a former Member of Parliament, before relocating to India.

How to go To Shahrail Boro Bari:

From the Singair Bus stand, you can take a Bus or Shared auto rickshaw to the Charigram Bazar in the south. After arriving at the location, which is only a few feet away, you may inquire as to the whereabouts of Shahrail Boro Bari.

 

9. Niyogi House/নিয়গি বাড়ি

The Niyogi House is located in Singair Upazila’s Pukur Para. It is an old residence erected more than a century ago by Ganesh Chandra Niyogi.

The massive arched doors and windows, as well as their frames, are not found anyplace. Inside, there was a long corridor that ran the length of the building.

Another enormous building, also in a deteriorated state, is currently used as the local college’s hostel. The smallest structure, which originally served as the kitchen, has been rebuilt and is now home to the Head of the same institution’s Department of Economics.

 

How to go to Niyogi House

Next stop on the route from Manikganj to Singair Bazar is Pukur Para. The area was originally home to numerous ponds, hence its name. You may have encountered a relatively large pond along the route. This pond is only a few steps away from the Niyogee residence.

 

10. Harirampur Upazila/হরিরামপুর

Harirampur Upazila in Manikganj district is 245,42 square kilometers in size. Shivalaya, Ghior, and Manikganj sadar upazilas border it on the north, Char bhadrasan and Faridpur sadar upazilas on the south, and Nawabganj (Dhaka) and Dohar upazilas on the south-east. There are 84994 males and 86280 females in this Upazila, with 150041 Muslims, 21202 Hindus, 10 Buddhists, and 21 other ethnic groups.

Major bodies of water or important rivers include the Padma and Ichamati, Bhatsala Beel, Gharilpur Beel, and Mollabari Canal.

The administrative Harirampur Thana was founded in 1845, and it was turned into an upazila in 1983.

A vast sea-like body of water known as ‘Tol Sagor’ existed between Savar and Faridpur. The Barman dynasty was created after the Chandra dynasty, and King “Hari Barman” ruled over this realm. This Upazila is thought to have been named after that ruler. It was first known as ‘Hariramnagar,’ then ‘Harirampur,’ and finally ‘Harirampur.’
