Dhaka National Medical College

The Dhaka National Medical College succeeds the Dhaka National Medical Institute, founded in 1925 as part of the Indian Sub-non-cooperation continent’s movement against British colonial rule, led by Mahatma Gandhi, Mawlana Muhammad Ali, and Mawlana Sawkat Ali.

In Bengal, two medical schools were established to train National Doctors of Modern Medicine. Calcutta National Medical Institute and Dhaka National Medical Institute were two such Medical Schools.

The Dhaka National Medical Institute was built on land donated by Zamider Raghunath Das near Bahadur Shah Park. Many Nationalists donated money to build it.

Sir Prafulla Chandra Roy KBE chaired the Institute’s first Governing Body. Ayurveda Institute founder Dr. J.C. Ghosh, Shadhana Ausadhalya, Roy Bahadur Kashab Chandra Banarjee, Zamider Jogesh Chandra Das and others were part of the governing body.

The Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital was a safe haven for Bangladesh Liberation War Freedom Fighters in 1971. After Bangladesh’s liberation in 1972, the hospital’s condition was deteriorating due to financial issues and the lack of an administrative body, as the previous Governing Body and Trustee Board were absent.

For the smooth administration and development of the hospital, the Adhoc Governing Body was formed under the chairmanship of Mr. M. Sirajul Islam MLA. Initiated by Mr. M. Sirajul Islam, Bangladesh Assistance Society of India donated taka 25 lacs.

Dhaka National Medical College graduates are eligible for limited registration with the UK General Medical Council. They can also take the US Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE).

The University of Dhaka forms the College’s governing body. The college’s current governing body is led by MP Kazi Firoz Rashid. The Prime Minister SK Hasina’s vision to build a digital Bangladesh is being implemented under his direct leadership.
