What are Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh is a country with a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVDs). Each year, we lose a significant number of people to heart disease. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a term that refers to a set of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. They include the following —
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) — a condition affecting the blood arteries that supply the heart muscle,
- Cerebrovascular disease — a disorder of the brain’s blood arteries,
- Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) — a condition affecting the blood arteries that supply the arms and legs,
- Rheumatic heart disease — damage to the heart muscle and valves caused by streptococcal germs in rheumatic fever,
- Congenital heart disease — birth defects that impair the normal development and function of the heart as a result of birth disorders in the heart structure,
- Pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis — blood clots in the leg veins that can dislodge and go to the heart and lungs.
Heart attacks and strokes are sudden events caused by a restriction in the blood flow to the heart or brain. Fatty deposits on the inner walls of blood arteries supplying the heart or brain are the most typical cause. Strokes are caused by brain hemorrhage or blood clots.
What are common symptoms of heart attacks and strokes?
Generally, there are no symptoms associated with the underlying blood vessel illness. A heart attack or stroke may be the initial manifestation of underlying illness. Among the symptoms of a heart attack are the following —
- A feeling of pain or discomfort in the center of the chest,
- Arms, left shoulder, elbows, jaw, or back pain or discomfort.
A stroke’s most typical symptom is abrupt weakness of the face, arm, or leg, usually on one side of the body. Other symptoms include the unexpected appearance of —
- Face, arm, or leg numbness, often on one side of the body,
- Fear, difficulty speaking or understanding,
- Inability to see well with one or both eyes,
- Dizziness, trouble walking, and/or lack of balance or coordination,
- Strong headaches for which no reason is recognized,
- Unconsciousness or fainting.
